Precision Diagnosis for Improved Chilli Productivity

Soma, a farmer from Gonahal village in Ballari, Karnataka, cultivates red chilli (HPH 5531) on one acre. After heavy rainfall, wilt symptoms appeared in several rows of his field. Without proper scouting knowledge, Soma relied on foliar symptoms and considered applying fungicides recommended by local dealers. This guesswork approach risked misdiagnosis, unnecessary costs, and ineffective control.

Intervention
Under the project “Strengthening Sustainability of the Spices Value Chain through FPOs,” supported by CII Foundation and CII-FACE as knowledge partners, Orkla India as the donor, and Farmitopia as the technical partner, the following interventions were undertaken:

  • Timely Field Support: Field staff equipped with the Cropmint+ platform conducted routine visits post-rainfall to identify emerging issues.
  • On-Field Scouting: Systematic scouting and technical assessment were carried out using Cropmint+.
  • Accurate Diagnosis: Root inspection confirmed nematode infestation, correcting the earlier misdiagnosis.
  • Knowledge Transfer: Field staff trained Soma in scientific scouting methods directly via Cropmint+.
  • Targeted Recommendations: Specific crop protection protocols and corrective agronomic practices were shared to address nematode-induced wilting.

Results

  • Crop Recovery: Nematode infestation was controlled, plant health improved, and fresh growth observed.
  • Yield Increase: Harvest rose to ~14 quintals compared to 10 quintals expected without intervention.
  • Revenue Protection: Revenue reached ~₹2,42,600 compared to ₹1,70,000 baseline.
  • Profitability: Shifted from a potential loss to a net profit of ~₹60,300.
  • Input Efficiency: Optimized expenditure through targeted, need-based applications instead of broad-spectrum spraying.
  • Economic Viability: Achieved a cost-to-return ratio of ~2.0x, demonstrating strong viability.

Conclusion
Systematic scouting and precision advisory transformed Soma’s chilli farming from potential disaster into success. By adopting scientific diagnosis and targeted recommendations, he improved yield, safeguarded revenue, and achieved profitability. This case highlights how timely field support and digital tools like Cropmint+ empower farmers with resilience and sustainability in spice value chains.
