Learning by Doing: Varsha’s Revolution in Rural STEM Education

Varsha Patil, a 31-year-old visionary educator from Abdullat village is transforming rural education landscape through experiential STEM learning, particularly for children of migrant workers and underserved communities. Growing up in a resource-constrained environment, she personally experienced the limitations of prioritizing theoretical learning over practical and saw how it stifled curiosity and problem-solving skills. Overcoming financial hardships, she pursued her passion for teaching and science education, initiating grassroots projects that focus on enhancing scientific temperament and foundational literacy in rural Maharashtra. In 2016, she co-founded Vidyoday Muktangan Parivar Foundation (VMPF) along with four others with the aim to bring activity-based STEM education to underserved communities. Through initiatives like Chote Kalam, Chote Scientist, Sevankur, and Vidyankur, she has impacted more than six thousand five hundred students, and close to 40 teachers, nurturing scientific curiosity and critical thinking. Her work is characterized by a deep commitment to activity-based learning, teacher empowerment, and community involvement through curated sessions and workshops. Her vision for the next f ive years includes expanding her initiatives and developing innovative teaching resources to enhance educational opportunities for rural students.
