Dreams in Action: Rumi’s Journey from Child Bride to Change-Maker

Rumi battled poverty, child labour, and child marriage to become a young change-maker at 23. Rumi began volunteering at the age of 14 with Project Potential, an NGO in Kishanganj that worked on education for underprivileged children. It was here that Rumi gained 1st hand exposure to her community and their challenges, transforming her into an advocate of women’s education and health in the region. For Rumi, her work was personal and built off the challenges shei faced in pursuing higher education, which only intensified after she was married at the age of 17. Struggling with poverty, mental abuse, and the stifling inability to continue her studies, Rumi found herself stuck. determined to pursue higher education she made the bold decision to divorce her restrictive husband and leave home in 2019, a choice that led to further ostracization from her community. In 2019, she again turned to Project Potential. Her first assignment was in her village of Dohar, where she taught anganwadi kids, alongside volunteering with a learning center started by Project Potential. Her interactive classes quickly led to an increased enrollement and attendance of children at the anganwadi in the village, earning her a good reputation. Starting her journey from education, Rumi observed the challenges in the region and constantly reformed her interventions expanding her work from education to relief and vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic, and spreading awareness about reproductive and menstrual health and hygiene among adolescent girls and women. Bagging multiple national fellowships like the “Period Fellowship” in 2022 Rumi has proven her commitment to education and health by working with 1500 adolescents from 12 schools in Jamui Bihar. In 2023, Rumi took a significant step forward by founding her own NGO, “Sapno Ki Pehel.” Through this organization, she aims to continue her work in health and education awareness, with a particular focus on developing more women leaders.
